Master Plan of The Regional General Hospital “Asklipieio” in Voula, Attica

The Hospital consists of 36 small and large buildings scattered over a 98.860 m2 plot with pine trees on the southern outskirts of Athens by the sea. All the buildings are quite old, some completely dilapidated and out of use before the end of this project. The purpose of the study was twofold:
A) To organise in the best way possible the medical and supporting functions of the hospital using all the existing buildings worth renewing and
B) To demolish the dilapidated buildings making roomfor new buildings of updated specifications and at the proper locations.
In order to achieve this purpose, the design team proceeded in the following ways:
– Examining current structural capability of each building separately, evaluating the cost of refurbishing against the final outcome of the restoration with regard to its possibilities and its location within the complex ;
– Proposing a gradual replacement and upgrading of the building in order to achieve a satisfactory functioning of the complex as a General Hospital and
– Phasing the construction period so as to proceed towards the desired final phase without interrupting the continuous operation of the hospital, especially in the light of the Olympic Games of 2004.
A critical part of the project was the relocation and development of the Hospital Functions. These had to be interrelated and interdependent and therefore the team proposed the demolishment of and replacement of a number of buildings. Not only would this provide unobstructed access to functions like emergency admittance but also the new location of buildings would much more effective service to patients and personnel.
