The Psychiatric Department is housed in a separate one-storey building within the complex of the General Hospital “Sismanogleio” to accommodate only adult patients.
The present study involves the design of an extension on the ground floor, and mainly the design of a psychiatric section on the first floor to accommodate adolescent patients. This section has one 7-bed ward for ordinary disorders equipped with all necessary amenities, laboratories, examination rooms, etc. as well as a special 7-bed ward for anorexic patients, designed according to the latest planning and nursing standards.
The new adolescent ward on the 1st floor is reached through an independent entrance on the ground floor, staircase and elevator which also lead to the second floor level, as well as a fire escape staircase according to the fire department regulations. Furthermore, a 35 m long metal bridge connecting the Psychiatric Department to the General Hospital building was planned from the second floor level.
The total added area is 1.700,00 sq. m.
Due to the above adjustments, the surrounding area had to be replanned to provide for easy access to the new entrance, open spaces for a number of outdoor functions necessary for the treatment, safe emergency exits and gathering places, and new landscaping.
